I knew that JC Brennan had talent, but I didn't know that she also apparently has guts to spare. After all, when she decided to tackle the vampire mythos, she didn't just write a book about A vampire, she wrote about THE vampire, Vlad Tepes, and it requires considerable bravery to take on such an iconic character.

What was the inspiration for the setup of ETERNAL BLOODLINES?
As strange as it may sound, my teenage fantasies and imagination inspired this story. I grew up in Skidway Lake—yes, it’s a real small town. I always told myself I’d get out of there—a place where everyone knew your name, your parents, who you hung out with, and how much trouble you got into. I tapped into those memories to create my main character, Amanda.
When it comes to vampires, I’ve always been fascinated by their immortality, their deathly cold skin, and their absence of a heartbeat. Over the years, I’ve done extensive research on the “real” vampire, Vlad Tepes—Vlad the Impaler. To ground the story in a touch of reality, I had to include him as a character and offer a different perspective on who he might have been.
One more thing readers should know… I don’t actually believe vampires are as romantic as they appear here. In truth, I see them as ghastly creatures that would tear you apart without feeling or remorse—hunters, more feral than animals, always on the prowl for their next kill. This darker version of the immortal vampire thrills me more than the romanticized version, but who doesn’t love a hint of romance in a paranormal story?
In fantasy novels, it’s easy to get carried away by the magical powers characters have. How did you balance the use of supernatural powers?
It’s true that it’s easy to get caught up in the magic and go overboard. However, I focus more on the characters than their powers—how they love, hurt, feel pain, and their triumphs. I want to make each character real—relatable.
The relationship that develops between Amanda and Mihnea is one of the book’s most compelling arcs. What were the main ideas guiding their connection throughout the story?
It was important that Mihnea was someone Amanda thought she knew, from her research and her passion for the vampire legend. It was also important that, when she finally met the man she believed she understood, he wasn’t that person at all. But he needed to be someone she could empathize with, someone she could relate to. He needed to surprise her and change everything she thought she’d learned.
Will there be a follow-up novel to this story?
I have thought about a second book, though I have not made a decision.
